I've decided to do Tip Day. Yup, all five entries today will tips on a given topic. To kick it off, I'm going to talk about how to pick a topic for your podcast. If you're a business podcaster then your choices are somewhat limited, but you might be surprised at how many topics might fit the bill.
How to Pick a Topic Tip #1
The first tip is to pick a topic. This may seem like stupid advice, but I invite you to peruse any podcast directory and take a look at the categorization or description of a bunch of the shows.
In short order you will discover a bunch of shows that have no real focus. They appear in 6 different categories and the description says something like "technology, cars, movies, and whatever else we want". While that sounds like a fun show to produce (heck, that's what our show is about), it's not very targetted and therefore has little monetary potential.
Listeners will also find it hard to listen to shows that ramble all over the place. It's fine to have more than one area of information on your show, but try to group them together so that all the shows fall under a general theme such as "technology" or "flowers" or "money".
