It's easy, really. A friend of mine said it best "Hold a podcasting conference and charge everyone to get in". While his comment was probably tongue-in-cheek, he's pretty much hit the nail on the head.
I recently talked about how the only podcasting jobs out there aren't actually in podcasting. Rather they're in blogging about podcasts or creating technologies to support podcasting. The same type of side-line economy is sprouting up in the conference space. Last week's International Podcast Expo and now the upcoming Podcasting and Portable Media conference are examples.
On one hand I'm happy any time podcasting comes up as that generates more awareness which really can't be bad thing, but I can't help but wonder why people are so willing to throw money in the podcasting gutter but not onto the main boulevard.
Is this the birth of a new business? "Podcast Support"? It wouldn't be the first time that a vision took a 90-degree turn from producer's vision. Maybe the true industry is in talking about podcasting rather than actually doing it.
