Slilcon Republic is reporting today that there are 38,000 podcasts on iTunes and only 36,000 radio stations world-wide. Apparently this is a big deal, but I don't understand why.
Citizen media (or whatever you want to call blogging and podcasting) is all about the long tail. It's all about regular Joes and Janes producing content that hits a niche market that...here's my famous quote...has been hitherto unprofitable for mainstream media to target. Assuming podcasting has had any type of success in hitting these markets at all, it's a no-brainer that there will be more podcasts that radio stations sooner or later.
How many blogs are there vice print newspapers and magazines? At a rough guess using some very preliminary investigation, I would say that there are approximately one bajillion more blogs than print media publications. Roughly.
Don't get me wrong - this stat is good, sure. But it's not revolutionary or unpredictable. It's an obvious milestone in the growth of citizen media.
