Somtimes it occurs to me that I may be using phrases that I haven't defined. There's something like 180 posts on Biz Podcasting now so even if I have mentioned it, a definition of "podcatcer" might be suitable to review.
"Podcatcher" is the affectionate name given to a computer program that is able to download podcast episodes via an RSS feed. A podcatcher is a special breed of RSS aggregator that can perform, at a minimum, the following functions:
- Subscribe to a podcast RSS feed
- Check the RSS feed to determine whether there are new podcast episodes available for download since the last time it checked
- Download any new episodes
Many podcatchers have more advanced capabilities such as transferring any downloaded episodes to a portable audio player, but this functionality is not required for an application to be considered a podcatcher.
