While this entry mostly deals with blogs, it paints an interesting picture how citizen media can do a pretty decent job of covering live events and capturing public opinion.
Kevin Lim over at Theory .isthereason has a link to a You Tube video on the citizen media coverage of the recent Singapore elections and some of his thoughts on what it means.
Personally, I think that main stream media will hold the lead in investigative journalism for a long time to come, but daily events and coverage of things like elections can easily be handled by citizen bloggers and podcasters.
Investigative journalism takes deep pockets. Watergate would never have been broken by an individual blogger. On the other hand, main stream media is always trying to 'tap into public opinion' which is pretty much the only thing citizen media is all about.
