As a blogger and podcaster, I'm aways acutely aware that we all live in an insular world. Even today, I doubt I could get a 15 out of a 100 random people in my local mall to admit they know what a blog is. Podcasting is even worse.
I decided to take the concept a little farther and see how the business genre of podcasting stacks up against the rest of the space. Turns out business podcasts are doing pretty well, but the gap between business and the top genres is quite wide.
Where available, I've broken down the number of business podcasts vice other genres in some directories. In some directories, business appears pretty far down the list, so I'm not going to list every genre that beats it out. Just some of the more interesting onces.
There are many other directories, but not all of them make the numbers so easy to find. There are only so many hours in a day.
There are many genres that are smaller than business, to be sure, and these rudimentary charts don't tell the whole story. On Podcast Alley, for example, business is actually the 6th-ish genre.
I'm pretty confident that deeper digging would continue to support the findings that business podcasts form a relatively small portion of the entire space.
The questions are: Why? And is it important? Should there be more business podcasts?
