Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central (and the Tech Podcast Network) sent out a warning to all podcasters last week: beware questionable advertisers.
Recently I had a firm approach me to find podcasts to run gambling advertising spots on podcast. The advertising rate offered up front was $175.00 CPM which is incredibly high and very unusual to be offered a rate with little or no questions asked, the way they wanted to do business was really odd in comparison to other ad deals I have brokered.
Wow - $175 CPM (per million impressions) is really, really, really high. Turns out that Todd didn't like the actual product or the ways in which the advertiser wanted to sell it, so he turned down the deal. Nicely done, Todd - that's a big paycheque to turn down.
Given that there's not a lot of money in podcasting so far, podcasters might be tempted to take pretty much any deal that comes along and some may be tempted to get involved with industries that they otherwise wouldn't.
If you're a hobby podcaster, do what you want. But if you're a pro podcaster or intending on turning your show into a business, beware of your bedmates. They may come back to haunt you.
