Note:Leesa Barnestakes over this blog while Jon enjoys his nuptials and honeymoon on the West Coast. He returns August 10th. Enjoy Leesa's take on podcasting in the meantime.
By way of Podcasting News, I found out about a cool tool developed by ProfCast (go to their page, scroll down and you'll see the tool on the bottom right). You can use ProfCast to update your RSS feed to include the new iTunes categories without having to make these changes manually.
It's pretty easy to use. I entered my URL (I think it wants my feed URL yes, it's the feed URL), plugged in my email (not sure why it wants that, but I did anyways) and clicked Submit.
Because I'm using to syndicate my podcast, there was no change needed to my feed. However, I'm wondering for those who aren't using Feedburner and if you haven't updated your podcast to the new iTunes categories, can you use this tool and report on it? Post your comments below, please.
Hi,
Do you know if there is any way to use those iTunes categories within your local iTunes? for searching for example.. i.e. it seems these categories are currently only used for a navigation aid for podcasts that are published/browsed on the public iTunes library.
I often find podcasts that may not necessarily want to be on the public itunes site, but folks would like to listen to them in the iTunes player. Would be nice to honor these categories within your local iTunes client.
You may find this "Web page to Podcast" greasemonkey script I wrote helpful. It finds mp3s on any web page that's not hip-to-podcast, and creates the rss file for you. Note that i simply set catgory = podcasts as I saw this somewhere once.. but doesn't seem to really matter for sake of listening to your personal set of podcasts on iTunes.
Al, I just love scripts, hacks and any piece of code that's designed to make my life a little bit easier (and more fun, I might add). I'm going to give your script a whirl. What fun!
As for the differences in iTunes categories, I've never noticed this before. I'm not a Mac user, so I've had no need to revisit the iTunes website after I downloaded iTunes to my local host.
