I've written a few posts recently that have to do with palmcatching (yes, I coined it and it's mine: podcatching directly onto a mobile device). The three cellular providers in Canada are Rogers Wirelss, Inc () ,which incorporates Fido; Bell Mobility, Inc (); and TELUS Corporation (). Virgin mobile has recently come to Canada, but they're not really doing business the same way as the existing providers so I'm not going to count them in this run.
In the next three entries, I'm going to take a look at each of the big providers with an eye to how feasible it is to palmcatch as a customer. There's a lot of movement on enabling music downloads to phones, but I don't see much in the way of podcasting.
All three offer a music store and of some type and a handful of handsets that can download music. Instead of a data charge for each song, the providers are charging a per-song fee a la all the other online music stores (except All Of MP3). The big question is: is it possible to get a podcast onto my phone directly? I'm not interested in phones that are MP3 capable and can have podcasts loaded onto them via a sync cable or memory card, I want to mobilecatch.
Stay tuned.
